(10 dic. 1837, Vevay, Ind., EE.UU.–4 sep. 1902, Lake George, N.Y.).

Novelista e historiador estadounidense. Se convirtió en un predicador itinerante a la edad de 19 años; estuvo a cargo de diversas parroquias y editó varios periódicos. Retrata de manera realista la Indiana rústica en The Hoosier School-Master [El rector de Indiana] (1871). Entre sus otras novelas se cuentan The End of the World [El fin del mundo] (1872), The Circuit Rider [El corredor de circuitos] (1874), Roxy (1878) y The Graysons [Los Grayson] (1888). Más adelante abordó la historia; sus libros Beginners of a Nation [Iniciadores de una nación] (1896) y Transit of Civilization from England to America [Tránsito de la civilización de Inglaterra a América] (1900) contribuyeron al desarrollo del estudio de la historia social.
